About the festival
The Niwot Film Festival is an independent film festival held February 5–7, 2027 in Niwot, Colorado — a small historic town fifteen minutes northeast of Boulder. The festival's main venue is Niwot Hall, the oldest active Grange hall in Colorado. Opening night features a ceremony and conversation with Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne tribal leaders; four confirmed films screen over the weekend, with more details to come. Most screenings are free or pay-what-you-can. The festival is presented by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association, the Niwot Business Association, and Thunder Wolf Native Arts & Culture.
The festival takes its name from Chief Nowoo³ (pronounced Nuh-woth) — known in English as "Niwot," meaning Left Hand — the Southern Arapaho leader who wintered in the Boulder Valley and sought peace and dialogue at every turn. The opening ceremony's conversation with Southern Arapaho and Cheyenne tribal leaders brings that history into the festival's first night.
