About the festival

The Niwot Film Festival is an independent ten-day film festival held January 21–31, 2027 in Niwot, Colorado — a small historic town fifteen minutes northeast of Boulder. The festival presents five programming tracks focused on Indigenous cinema, immigrant and diaspora stories, Colorado filmmakers, environmental film, and youth film. Most screenings are free or pay-what-you-can. The festival is presented by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association, the Niwot Business Association, and Thunder Wolf Native Arts & Culture.

The festival takes its name from Chief Nowoo³ (pronounced Nuh-woth) — known in English as "Niwot," meaning Left Hand — the Southern Arapaho leader who wintered in the Boulder Valley and sought peace and dialogue at every turn. The Left Hand Series, one of the festival's five tracks, brings Indigenous filmmakers back to the land named for their leader.
